Basket Pressed Merlot 2017

This traditional French variety has found a home nestled on the 'right bank' of the creek, opposite the century old Block 6 vines.

Often providing supple red and black berried fruits and a round mouth feel to blends with Cabernet, Merlot on it's own produces a medium bodied wine with a long, silky finish. A variety not done any favours by a particular Hollywood movie, our Merlot continues to surprise many who have forgotten just how good this variety can be.

These vines are planted on the Eastern bank of the creek next to the Cabernet. Soils are a mixture of rich alluvial clay loam and lighter sandy loam with underlying geology consisting of calcareous sandstone and limestone. The fruit was open fermented and hand plunged for 14 days on skins, prior to traditional basket pressing. The wine then matured for 8 months in French oak barriques.
